CE standards for natural stone

Although the whole arena of natural stone is often looked upon as a very traditional line of business, there have recently been some interesting new developments. Not only was there the introduction a few years ago of a growing number of 'exotic' kinds of natural stones but there has also been the growth in the need for technical reference documents for natural stone in general.

BELTRAMI keeps on being a pioneer in these matters: on the one hand with the launching of new exclusive materials, on the other hand in giving honest and reliable information to the customer. For doing the latter, we work in close collaboration with the Belgian Building & Research Institute. This teamwork resulted in the finalisation of the CE-standardisation for external flooring in natural stone. By having done this, Beltrami is the first wholesaler in Europe to have put from 1st of May 2004 the required CE label on all its external materials.

Sometime soon the European standards will impose new testing methods for finished products in natural stone for internal use - from September 2006 CE labels will be obligatory. The new standards are described in technical guidelines called NBN EN 12057 and NBN EN 12058. Naturally Beltrami, keen to remain in its pole position, has already started preparations to meet this standardisation.

Herwig Callewier, Managing Director of Beltrami is one of the members of the technical committee 'Stone and Marble' which is part of the Belgian Building & Research Institute and they have recently issued new recommendations on the use and testing of stones. The basic rule for these new recommendations is the renewed Technical Guideline ref. TV 205.
